What is matriarchal society?
What does “matriarchal” mean and how are societies structured that still live in matriarchal communities today? Often we mistake “matriarchal” with female dominance but the truth conveys a very different situation. Based on the VR experience “The Matriarx” we will explore matriarchal structures and find out, what about it is different to our current hierarchal structure. Let’s find out if this knowledge can enrich your own personal approach to everyday life and relationships.

Julia is a writer and producer living in Berlin. In her work she focuses on female perspectives and characters, no matter how weird or funny or normal they could be as she believes women are not truthfully represented in the media of today. In 2016 she co-founded the Sinnema Animation Studio and started diving into the field of Virtual Reality. Her VR experience “The Matriarx” travelled the festivals on a global level and received several awards. The Matriarx is based on her time in Juchitàn Mexico. In 2018 she lived with a local family and shared their everyday life, as Juchitàn is one of the few places on earth where matriarchal structured have survived.

Was bedeutet „matriarchal“ und wie sind Gesellschaften strukturiert, die heute noch in matriarchalen Gemeinschaften leben? Häufig wird „matriarchal“ mit weiblicher Dominanz verwechselt – tatsächlich beschreibt der Begriff jedoch eine ganz andere gesellschaftliche Realität.
Ausgehend von der VR-Erfahrung „The Matriarx“ werden wir matriarchale Strukturen näher kennenlernen und herausfinden, worin sie sich von unseren heutigen hierarchischen Gesellschaftsformen unterscheiden. Gemeinsam wollen wir erkunden, ob dieses Wissen neue Impulse für den eigenen Alltag und zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen geben kann.

Julia ist Autorin und Produzentin und lebt in Berlin. In ihrer Arbeit konzentriert sie sich auf weibliche Perspektiven und Figuren – egal wie ungewöhnlich, humorvoll oder alltäglich sie sein mögen – da sie der Meinung ist, dass Frauen in den heutigen Medien nicht wahrheitsgemäß repräsentiert werden.
2016 gründete sie gemeinsam das Sinnema Animation Studio und begann, sich intensiv mit dem Feld der Virtual Reality zu beschäftigen. Ihre VR-Erfahrung „The Matriarx“ wurde weltweit auf Festivals gezeigt und mehrfach ausgezeichnet.
„The Matriarx“ basiert auf Julias Zeit in Juchitán, Mexiko. Im Jahr 2018 lebte sie dort mit einer lokalen Familie und teilte ihren Alltag. Juchitán gilt als einer der wenigen Orte weltweit, an denen matriarchale Strukturen bis heute erhalten geblieben sind.
